Welcome to the Agora!
This is an Agora. You can find a reference implementation live at https://anagora.org/ . This Agora's architecture has several components distributed over three git repositories:
-
The Agora root repository, which you are browsing: https://github.com/flancian/agora.
- This root repository contains a high level definition of the Agora as expressed by the list of digital gardens to be integrated (
gardens.yaml
) and the contract agreed upon by the community (CONTRACT.md
).
- This root repository contains a high level definition of the Agora as expressed by the list of digital gardens to be integrated (
-
The Agora Server: https://github.com/flancian/agora-server.
- Which contains a reference Python / Flask web app that integrates and serves content. It is live at https://anagora.org .
-
The Agora Bridge: https://github.com/flancian/agora-bridge.
- Which contains a set of processes to retrieve content as volunteered by users.
To join
If you would like to join the reference Agora described in this particular repository, please send a PR adding your garden to gardens.yaml
or reach out to flancian or a member of the fedstoa with a pointer to your content and a choice of username.
After being integrated, your garden will appear live at https://anagora.org/@username and your notes will be integrated into the Agora; this means that if you volunteer a note named foo.md
, it will show up in node https://anagora.org/foo together with all similar notes by other Agora users.
To run
To run the reference Agora:
- Clone all three repositories described above (ideally in the $HOME directory of a dedicated user; this is not strictly needed, but scripts might assume this).
- Install Python requirements in each of
agora-server
andagora-bridge
:
python3 -m venv venv
. venv/bin/activate
pip3 install -r requirements.txt
- In
agora
: runbin/pull
to start usingagora-bridge
to periodically pull the list of digital gardens defined ingardens.yaml
. - In
agora-server
: run./run-dev.sh
to start the dev web interface; or refer to https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-serve-flask-applications-with-uswgi-and-nginx-on-ubuntu-18-04 for instructions on how to set up the Agora as a system service on top of uwsgi (seeprod.ini
) and nginx.
Of course you are also free to run your own Agora! To do this, just run the bridge against a local gardens.yaml
file -- or fork the root repository and adjust as wished. As usual please reach out if you need a hand with anything :)
Wait, what's an Agora again?
An Agora is a distributed, goal-oriented social network operating on a cooperatively built and maintained knowledge graph. The implementation you are currently looking at tries to assemble such a graph out of a collection of digital gardens, but other data sources are coming.
You can view the Agora at https://anagora.org . For how to write to it: if you take personal digital notes with some system such as foam or obsidian, you are most of the way there; all you need to do is share them with the Agora (see "join" above). If you don't, but you would like to, please refer to agora client or reach out!
Contract
If you contribute directly to an Agora you are assumed to be in agreement with its then current contract.
Please refer to the Agora's contract, in particular as posted by the system account @agora (which is binding for all users).

README
See [[Neil's Digital Garden]].
My [[nowtions]].
I am Maya of maya.land, where more biographical details can be found. I am an extensive [[tiddlywikiist]] privately, but I like the idea of contributing to the wonderful coop vibe goin' on here, so I'm hoping to figure out a subset that's useful to share.
Agora Digital Garden
What is this
This is a [[digital garden]] serving as my [[interface]] to any [[Agora server]] which has a [[contract]] compatible with [[Anagora]]'s.
Things that are enclosed by [[double brackets]] are [[wikilinks]]. Through things like [[Anagora]], they'll be rendered as clickable [[link]]s.
Who am I
I'm [[Jayu Eleuthéria]], or [[Jayu]] for short. You may use any pronouns to refer to me. I'm what I do (and what is done through me), and I do many things (and many things are done through me).
I do [[digital garden]]s (and [[digital garden]]s are done through me). As such, I'm also a [[digital gardener]]. And my [[motive]]s are:
- [[Digital garden]]s help me do things (and let things get done through me) better.
- [[Digital garden]]s are something I enjoy [[building]] for the sake of [[building]] them (and I sincerely hope that my [[digital garden]]s would enjoy [[building]] me for the sake of [[building]] me, if they were [[conscious being]]s).
- I'm quite interested in [[knowledge representation]] and [[knowledge management]], even though I have no [[expertise]] in either.
You can learn more about this [[garden]] through its [[index]] [[element]]; and more about me through the "[[Jayu]]" [[element]]. For [[Agora]] [[user]]s' convenience, I've [[pull]]ed both below, and you'll be able to see them somewhere on the "[[README]]" [[node]].
My Garden setup
Sensitive information is stored in a "walled garden", an encrypted keybase git-submodule. But couldn't combine existing repo with it, due to GitHub's jekyll complains, as explained in [[foam]]. So it has to happen in 2 steps: clone and attach submodule locally only.
Walled Garden
Command to attach my walled Garden:
git submodule add -f keybase://private/ankostis/GardenWall Walls
The -f
is needed because .gitmodules
is in .gitignore
,
for it must not be pushed to GitHub repo.

Nikola theme forked from https://github.com/pagecho/maupassant
Description from the original:
A simple typecho template with great performance on different devices.
Suggested configuration is to add Home to nav links so you see the "tabs" properly:
NAVIGATION_LINKS = {
DEFAULT_LANG: (
("/", "Home"),
("/archive.html", "Archive"),
("/categories/", "Tags"),
),
}
TODO:
- Could add support for fontawesome icons in nav bar like some forks of this theme have.
- Image gallery is somewhat broken
Nikola MDL Mako Template
This theme is based from Material Design Lite templates. It gets the idea from the blog example. This theme is for Nikola static site generator and used Mako templates. The RSS feed icon is getting from Community Icons
Installation
To install:
Enter the command line below at the console
$ nikola theme -i mdl
Edit conf.py
for setting these values below:
THEME = "mdl"
Refer to
Customizing Your Site
for more information. If post_type
is used, it accepts a dictionary value,
where key
is the post meta type and value is the icon name from
Google Material Design Icons. There is
an example in Customization
section.
Style development
You can skip this section if the theme is going to be used as it is. As the
final styles.css
is generated and placed in assets/css
folder.
The css file is generated using SASS compiler. If you
have it installed, you can generate the final styles.css
file by calling
make
as there is a Makefile
that contains the generation commands.
If you want to add custom styles in custom.scss or custom.css, set mdl__custom_css
to True
. Both files are git-ignored.
JavaScript development
If you want to add custom JavaScript in custom.js, set mdl__custom_js
to True
. The custom.js file is git-ignored.
Components
Here are the components that used in this theme
- Buttons (mdl-button) on site buttons
- Cards (mdl-card) on post, story and gallery
- Layout (mdl-layout) on site layout
- Navigation (mdl-navigation) on top and drawer navigations
- Grid (mdl-grid) on site grid
- Footer (mdl-mega-footer or mdl-mini-footer)

👋 Welcome to your new Foam Knowledge Base!
Getting started
This documentation assumes that you have a GitHub account and have Visual Studio Code installed on your Linux/MacOS/Windows machine.
-
If you haven't yet, browse over to the main Foam documentation to get an idea of what Foam is and how to use it.
-
Press "Use this template" button at foam-template (that's this repository!) to fork it to your own GitHub account. If you want to keep your thoughts to yourself, remember to set the repository private.
-
Clone the repository to your local machine and open it in VS Code.
Open the repository as a folder using the
File > Open...
menu item. -
When prompted to install recommended extensions, click Install all (or Show Recommendations if you want to review and install them one by one)
After setting up the repository, head to [[getting-started]] to get familiar with your new knowledge base!
To learn more about how to use Foam, read the Recipes bubbles of the Foam documentation workspace.
And remember that you can always join our Foam community on Discord!
Using Foam
We've created a few Bubbles (markdown documents) to get you started.
- [[inbox]] - a place to write down quick notes to be categorized later
- [[getting-started]] - learn how to use your Foam workspace
- [[todo]] - a place to keep track of things to do
In the docs
directory you can find everything you need to learn the basics of Foam.
Submitting Issues
As you may have noticed, issues are disabled. With the goal to keep the project fairly easy to maintain, please file your issues in the main Foam repository:

- [[Exobrains/wikis made by other people]]
Exobrain, or "second brain", or "brain dump" is something like public wiki where you can keep your bookmarks, notes, ideas and thoughts.
Other people can search in your exobrain without having to physically interact with you.
The point is not to avoid physical interaction altogether, but to scale collaboration and knowledge exchange with other people.
It also allows for quicker iteration in writing blog posts or developing thoughts – I can just quickly publish it here, share it gradually, and receive immediate feedback.
You can find org-mode sources of the files here, and the code to process and compile it here.
My exobrain contains semi-curated notes, tasks and links.
You can read more about exobrain on on its project page.
How to interact with exobrain?
Granted, there is lots of stuff here, and it's unclear what should you start with (if at all?).
navigation sidebar
It might be useful to explore and overview what's in my exobrain.
I'm still figuring out a system to distinguish 'link dump' pages for more interesting ones.
For now I'm just marking the latter with emojis, like this ⭐.
search
I imagine search as the primary means of interacting with the exobrain.
The search yields you results as you type, which means incredibly fast feedback.
Note that at the moment it's still in development.
via the source code?
You can also clone the org-mode repository and eplore it in emacs directly.
content
Some pages are quite unprocessed, but hopefully enough to make sense, especially if you are looking for something specific.
Note that not everything is my own text:
some (if not most?) notes are just clippings
Usually the clippings are quoted like this.
, so hopefully it's easy to tell apart what's quoted and what are my own thoughts.
If it's a clipping, doesn't mean I agree with it, or think the information is true, just means that I found it curious or worthy further research.
page structure
Usually the content on the top of the page is somewhat curated and has higher information weight.
In the bottom of the page the links I've refiled pile up, and it's a bit more chaotic.
Usually I separate the two with ============================
.
For example, see page on python.
what do timestamps/priorities/todo states mean?
First, if they annoy you, can turn toggle them via the settings in the bottom of the page.
- timestamps usually correspond to the time I created a bookmark/note, it's useful to assess how relevant is information (e.g. something from 5 years ago is more likely to be irrelevant to me now than something I added yesterday)
- priorities roughly mean how important/valuable I think a piece of information/todo is, for me or other people.
Some bookmarks don't have priorities, which usually means I either haven't processed them yet. - todo states (TODO/STRT/DONE) usually mean whether I've processed a bit of information, or it's in my queue
longevity
While I'm generally doing my best to combat link rot, notes may move around, some IDs change, etc.
So if you see a piece of useful information here, make sure to copy its text, not just the heading link.
FAQ
- do you really think that what you have here is interesting to anyone
Yes, to some people. It's also useful to me when I want to share something I've already written down with other people. - isn't it too much information?
Yes, I have a certain kind of FOMO. But I think I'm managing it relatively well :) - are you actually retaining any knowledge?
Yes, in fact I can't imagine learning without notetaking.
I certainly don't retail all of it (or perhaps even most of it).
But even knowing where you can find some information in the form you like is a big part of learning process. - aren't you making yourself vulnerable by sharing too much unfiltered content?
I don't know… maybe? This is kind of inevitable with any form of public online communication.
I do have beliefs/opinions from several years ago I'm not holding anymore or even cringe at.
If you think something I have here is problematic etc., please feel free to reach out, and I'll be happy to discuss, I realy am open for change.

Welcome !
This is a place for all participants of the Christopher Alexander reading group to upload files -- whether they be notes, images, reference texts, etc. -- for sharing with the group!
How To:
- please only upload files to the folder with your name on it (so we keep track of who shared what)
- everyone can access all folders and files (that's how we share)
- some file formats will be displayed by the GitHub webpage in a readable form directly: such formats include .txt, .md, .pdf, .jpg, .png, ...
- files in the .docx format of Microsoft Word and various other formats cannot be display on this webpage and not everyone might have the software to display such formats on their personal computer, so it is encouraged, whenever possible, to use file formats that are as accessible as possible!
- to upload files, select the "add file" button, then select "upload file" from the drop-down menu. Once the file is uploaded, one needs to scroll down a bit and click the green button labeled with "Commit Changes" for the file to be save to the folder.
Further/other info:
- The word "repository" that is used on the GitHub webpage can be thought of as just meaning "folder" or "place"
- Some documents (such as .txt files and .md files) can be created and/or edited directly in the GitHub webpage (there is a little pencil symbol to enter edit mode). In order to save changes, one needs to scroll down and click the green button labeled with "Commit Changes".
This is Simon's folder for the "patterning" reading group. A place for any kinds of files - personal notes, images, references, etc.

An object is something that can be unambiguously referenced by means of an address.
A simple object is an object containing no parts.
The following are simple objects:
Complex objects are objects that consist of parts.
With the exception of the empty context, every complex object contains a context, which is required for assigning value to an interpretation

Here we are in the [[index]] of my [[digital garden]] -- which serves, by extension, as an entry point to the [[Agora of Flancia]].
If you are reading this in an [[Agora]] proper, you should see it rendered surrounded by several other indexes -- potentially one for each user contributing to the Agora, in some order :) If you are reading this in [[git]] or an only partially supported editor, please visit anagora.org or some other well-known Agora to render this with resolved links and full context :).
You can add your own contributions to the index of any Agoras you participate in by adding a resource like index.md
to your [[garden]] or [[stoa]]. More in general, resources matching a particular title will show up in matching nodes or Agora locations.
Please see [[how to edit this Agora]] below if you're interested in contributing or [[how to run an Agora]] for instructions for running your own.
Nodes
A [[node]] is a collection of [[resources]] having to do with a topic; a [[thing]] or an [[idea]] or whatever you want it to be.
The following are maybe interesting nodes to serve as entry points to this garden, and to the Agora at large.
- [[Person]]: contains links to nodes about [[people]].
- [[Agora]]: I write about the Agora often, in the Agora of course :) This node, like all and the Agora proper, is a [[work in progress]] -- but it should be a reasonable starting point to understand what the [[Agora]] is and what it tries to achieve.
- [[Commons]]: the [[Free]] [[Commons]] is an ideal that the Agora tries to uphold and represent for the benefit of its users and all sentient beings. A lot of my writing has to do with the Commons in one way or another.
- #go: you can find in the context links to nodes which contain a URL marked as canonical for the topic in question. It is an example of an [[Agora action]] which [[redirects]] to these URLs on demand.
Beyond checking the resources in the nodes proper (mostly text notes), remember to check for [[links]] in and out of each context established through use.
Journals
- Nodes whose titles look like dates, like e.g. those matching [[ISO 8601]] or [[RFC 3339]], are interpreted as declarations of public [[journals]].
-
If you visit node [[journals]] in an Agora, it should lead you to a variety of time-anchored contributions, e.g.:
- [[2024-02-19]].
- [[journal/2024-02-23]].
- [[2024-02-24]].
How to contribute to this Agora
If you like to take personal notes (recommended)
See [[Agora editors]] for alternatives. I ([[Flancian]]) currently recommend:
- [[Silver Bullet]] ([[MIT]] license) <- start here by default as of the time of writing ([[2024]]).
- [[Logseq]] ([[AGPL]]).
- [[Obsidian]] (closed source).
Then sign up for a [[git]] provider, like https://codeberg.org (or the better known and decent but corporate-run https://github.com), upload your garden to it (this yields the nice side effect of keeping it backed up but under your control!) and send us its location and your desired username. See [[Agora signup]] for more.
If you prefer to contribute from social media
You can also contribute straight from the [[Fediverse]] once you get an account in a server (e.g. one providing [[Mastodon]] to a community, or one you run yourself). I am part of and help run [[social.coop]]; it is a good one if you are interested in [[cooperativism]]. There's thousands more! See [[Map of the Fediverse]] for more.
Once you sign up to the [[Fediverse]], you can follow [[@agora@botsin.space]] and it will watch your posts for [[wikilinks]]. You can configure the bot to include the full text of your post or only links; and to also include, and respond to, post with #hashtags.
If you just want to write down something quickly and don't care about attribution
Consider just leaving an anonymous note anywhere around the [[Agora]] in a [[stoa]], which is a public space meant for collaboration (think [[wiki]] or shared editor) available in each [[node]].
For more
Please [[reach out]] if you want to try [[note taking]] or the [[Fediverse]], regardless of whether you would like to contribute your notes to the [[Agora]]; if you have any questions; or if you need [[help]] in general!
If you remember one thing, remember this: [[In Flancia there is an Agora]] :)

Matthew's Index
Hi, I'm Matthew Thomas ([[@mwt/identity]]) you can find my things at [[@mwt/README]].
Hello, this index exists just for the Agora.

This knowledge graph is a work in progress that will eventually become a specification for the unrival protocol.
Unrival is a protocol that can be used to create bottom-up, distributed social credit networks. These networks can track the credibility of their member agents, whose actions may lead to accumultation or loss of credit (a proxy for credibility).
Agents of disjoint networks with very different notions of credibility -- divided by political or religious differences, for example -- can nonetheless exchange credit, because Unrival ledgers implement the recursive credit-commons-protocol.
The intended effect is the rectification-of-names. In colloquial terms, this means making sure things are what they say they are (at least within the confines of an Unrival network)
Ultimately, the goal is to create a foundation for effective decentralized governance. We believe in rules over rulers. And since Unrival is adaptive, principles over rules.
To learn more, have a look at the whitepaper: https://github.com/unrival-protocol/documentation/blob/main/source/whitepaper.org

The front page to my [[digital-garden]]. Hi mom!
Welcome to the [[Agora]]!
Ahoy there!
This [[Agora]] is a [[wiki like]] [[experimental social network]] and [[distributed knowledge graph]].
-
/nodes lists all [[pages]] in this Agora.
- A [[node]] is the set of all notes and resources with a given title or otherwise mapping to an [[entity description]]. Subnodes (blocks) in a node can come from a variety of sources; they are resources volunteered by Agora users through their independent [[repositories]]. As of August 2021, these are mostly notes from [[digital gardens]].
- /latest shows nodes by modification time.
-
/users displays all users in this Agora. Click through to see their contributions.
- /journals displays all subnodes that look like they belong to a daily entry (these are subnodes whose filenames look like dates, such as
YYYY-MM-DD
).
- /journals displays all subnodes that look like they belong to a daily entry (these are subnodes whose filenames look like dates, such as
The [[wikilink]] is the heart of this [[Agora]]: wikilinks serve as a tool to indicate a social [[context]] assembled out of individual and group contributions. In this Agora, [[foo bar]] will resolve to every resource that identifies with entity 'foo'; in particular, currently every file named foo-bar.md
, foo-bar.jpg
, foo-bar.png
, etc. An Agora tries to best-effort integrate user contributions while preserving meaning and volunteering interesting information. You can also think of it as a [[sequential wiki]].
If you'd like to join this Agora, please refer to [[agora signup]]. If you'd like to run your own Agora, please refer to [[agora install]] and/or reach out to [[flancian]], the maintainer.
If you're interested in knowing what's coming next, please refer to [[agora plan]] or join [[flancia collective]].
Have a nice day!
