The culture industry
Been listening to The Partially Examined Life episode about Adorno on the Culture Industry. The [[culture industry]] being the mass production of films etc for the purposes of rendering people docile and perfect for the consumption of unnecessary goods.
They say [[Adorno]] (/Horkheimer) very explicitly wanted it referred to as a culture industry, to make clear it was driven from above and imposed. Not a natural representation of the desires of the masses.
Can definitely see the parallels with the [[social industry]] and guess this is probably why Richard Seymour used that name in [[The Twittering Machine]].
