Bleeding edge is really well done Flash or other more "active" technologies: XAML, XUL, Java Webstart. Does this mean you have to ignore standards? Definitely not, but here it's more about interfaces (XML-RPC, SOAP, platform APIs) than formats (XHTML etc.).
