Be careful with Twitter, they said. You'll get addicted.
I said: don't worry, I have it under control. I recognize you can get addicted to social networks; I'm doing this purposefully. I want to investigate how to hack dopamine hacking, in a way: how to use the dynamics that social networks exploit for my own benefit, or (stretch goal) for the benefit of society.
I still got hooked. I do believe a lot of what's come out of it thus far is productive: I try to use Twitter as an open note taking tool, to "think socially" -- to motivate myself to get my writing out there, even if it's in bite sized chunks. But I'm also falling prey to the algorithm; one that, of course, I can't control. The algorithm's objectives are not my objectives; I can try to bend it, but I can't replace it, so all in all Twitter is sometimes competitive instead of complementary.
In any case, these are what I consider the relative highlights of my Twitter career so far. I've set up go links for each of these to make referencing them easier.
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-ai-safety , my post popular tweet ever -- the result of playing with GPT-3 through AI Dungeon.
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-bolo , where I comment bolo'bolo -- an anarchist classic by p.m.
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-clojure , where I try to learn Clojure (and mostly fail).
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-gpt3 , more about GPT-3.
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-antisocial , where I comment Antisocial by Marantz.
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-finding-chaos , where I comment Finding Chaos by Heather Marsh.
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-philosophy , a thread I thought could be useful as a starting point to learn more about philosophy.
- https://flancia.org/go/twitter-encyclopedias , a thread about online encyclopedias.
I've also set up a trivial redirect from https://flancia.org/t/x to a Twitter search for 'x' in my account. Enjoy (?). E.g. https://flancia.org/t/agora .

[[Twitter]] could be part of the [[Agora]].
- The [[Agora]] can exist anywhere in the internet where users can generate content.
-
I have started using [[wikilinks everywhere]]; even if they won't work right now, we'll make them work later :)
- For example with one of our planned [[browser extensions]].
- Or just by setting up processes that "pull" all tweets with explicit wikilinks as backlinks to matching nodes.
- See [[agora-twitter-integration]].
- Aside: I hope [[Mastodon]] can replace Twitter some day, as it's open and user controlled.
-
See also:
- [[tweet]] for, well, direct links to tweets.
- Backlinks here for every person with a known Twitter account.
Twitter is a proprietary parasocial network. It is a good notion to avoid using it. The best thing about it is the big amount of good artwork posted there.

I used the [[Twitter Archive Eraser]] to delete all my favourites and all my tweets on Twitter.
This tool is much faster than all the other solutions I've seen because it requires you to download your Twitter archive, first. That's always a good idea. Then it gets the tweet ids from the archive instead of requesting them from Twitter itself, and that's what makes it so fast.
Same idea but do it yourself? [[tweetkiller]] is a Python script that does the same thing: it goes through your archive to extract the IDs.

Twitter is an American microblogging and social networking service on which users post and interact with messages known as "tweets". Registered users can post, like and retweet tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Users access Twitter through its website interface or its mobile-device application software ("app"), though the service could also be accessed via SMS before April 2020. Twitter, Inc. is based in San Francisco, California, and has more than 25 offices around the world. Tweets were originally restricted to 140 characters, but was doubled to 280 for non-CJK languages in November 2017. Audio and video tweets remain limited to 140 seconds for most accounts. — Wikipedia

Twitter released internal research showing it “amplifies more tweets from rightwing politicians and news outlets than content from leftwing sources.” That’s something anyone paying attention has known for a while, but I guess it’s good to see the platform at least admit it
So yes, it’s good to have proof of something we’ve known for a while, but don’t give Twitter too much credit when it’s still amplifying right-wing content and its CEO is not only complicit, but pushing right-wing trash of his own
