 Early socialists in particular likely advocated for republicanism over direct
 democracy or outright abolition of the state because they all lived under
 autocracies.

The [[file:20200706092530-german_social_democratic_party.org][SPD]] called for a republic in [[file:20210130191322-germany.org][Germany]] because they lived under the [[file:20210302145713-second_reich.org][Second
Reich]], which itself was an empire. Russian revolutionaries also called for a
republic given that they lived under an empire.
